Traditional and Self-Publishers
Traditional publishing houses or companies have been publishing books with the rising cost, but writers are getting the short end of the stick. At one time, authors were paid handsomely, in advance. But only if they produced a stella novel. Either fiction or non-fiction, the book had to meet the demands of the readers. However, the disadvantage is, not being in control of the novel. Once a title is published by a traditional company, that publisher owns all publishing rights. For example, if the author is offered a movie deal, that person would have to get the permission from the publisher, and from the agent if any, in order to may a deal. This also includes any money, which would be split three ways. Even-though the author is listed as the copyright owner, the publisher retains all publishing rights, and copyrights, which means, they own the novel. It's safe to say that putting a book together is no easy task. But it is well worth it, if the author owns 100% of his/her title, red tape is not a factor.
It's a great feeling to make decisions without having a middle man. I do speak from experience because it took me, six long years to complete my first novel. Once you see your work in written form, and then in book form is a wonderful feeling. To read my proofs, and see a release date was one of the most exciting moments in my life. However, it's much easier to become published now. Yet, to own all publishing rights/copyright is totally different... And as I mentioned earlier, putting your own title together can cost a pretty penny. If a writer decides to self-publish, this is fairly the same outcome, except self-publishers print on demand. Also, if a writer wants to sell books to friends and relatives, they have to purchase their novel, from the publisher. But at a discount, a very small discount.
One company offered me a 4-6% discount and twenty free paper back books. Afterwards, I would have to purchase any extras. I do recall at my very first book signing, I was sitting with a fellow author, and she explained to me, how fortunate I was to own my novel. She explained that she couldn't afford to purchase more books, therefore, she didn't have extra books to sell at the signing. It was very frustrating for this author. I felt for her. Once she told me her situation, I felt very blessed, that I had someone managing me, my husband. Sometimes, I got a bit frustrated, because I wanted to see my book in print! I didn't care who printed the book. I am so glad he didn't pay me any mind. I own all publishing rights including the copyright of my book. But as I mentioned it is worth every dime we spent.
If you are looking to get rich or become famous, well get in line. There are millions of books out there. It seems like every person in America is a writer/author. There are no longer big down payment checks, for a first time writers with a debut novel. Now we have the self-publishing companies, that have made it virtually easy and cheaper. With the author paying-out-of-pocket to get published. However, they don't really explain to you, how the book business really works. They will get you published and even help market your title. However, not unless you have written an OUTSTANDING story (be it fiction or non-fiction),your chances of being discovered are like one in a million. You might even hope for a movie deal. You will be grateful to see your novel in a book store or a library. I know I was elated when mines finally hit the shelves. These are facts that I have learned since becoming a published author. I was blessed to have a producer stumble across my book, he read it and offered me a movie deal. It's a long process and its still in the hunt.. The producer's untimely passing have put me on hold. But I will not give up. Your readers will tell you the truth about your book. Don't be afraid to asks for reviews once your book has circulated. Feedback is most important and ratings. To see what I am speaking about, visit my website adesperateman.com read the reviews.
